Effective communication is one of the keys to success, and when you’re good at it, people notice.
Most people think that strengthening communication skills involves developing persuasive speech and conversational skills, but what you may not realize is just how important effective listening skills can be.

Without an effective listener, none of your conversational skills would matter. This is because your points – no matter how clear – still wouldn’t be heard or understood.

Remember that listening is a full 50% of the communication effort so it’s worth your time to develop this precious skill, too.

Here are some effective listening techniques you can use to build your listening skills:

1. Fight the urge to speak. Sometimes when you’re engaged in a heated conversation, you start to concentrate on what you’re going to say next. You may even be tempted to open your mouth before the other person is finished. Make the extra effort to keep your lips sealed until they’re through talking.

* While they’re speaking, don’t worry about what you’re going to say or how you’re going to say it. Instead, focus on the words and body language of the other person.

2. Look interested. Your nonverbal communication skills are important while you’re listening. If you’re looking disinterested and uncaring, the person trying to communicate with you will likely pick up on these subtle hints. They may be flustered or less likely to share their thoughts. Makes sense, right?

* Engage with the person talking. Make eye contact and nod your head or smile. Let your conversation partner know that their points are coming across to you.

3. Repeat the highlights. One way to literally tell your conversation partner that they’re effectively communicating is to simply restate their points. You can repeat key phrases in an affirming tone. You can even give them a quick summary of what they just said in your own words.

* Avoid sharing your opinions when repeating their concepts or ideas. At this point, you simply want to communicate that you’ve completely understood their meaning.

4. Ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask your conversation partner to elaborate on what they’re saying. If you need further information, then ask for it. The important thing is that you understand what they’re trying to get across.

5. Be patient. It’s also important to maintain patience, especially when working with people who may be shy or may not have the ability to communicate very well. If you’re not patient, you may end the conversation prematurely or scare off your conversation partner.

6. Follow your partner’s lead. Being an effective listener doesn’t mean that your only job is to listen. You can certainly add to the conversation, too. At the same time, you don’t want to overpower the conversation. Add your input when they ask for it or when they’ve finished their point.

What makes a good listener
Remember that practice makes perfect. After you’ve had an important conversation, ask yourself what you remember from the conversation. Write down the details if necessary. Did you allow the other person to do most of the talking?

When you fight the urge to dominate conversations, you’ll be able to truly hear what people have to say!

Unleash The Power of Your Mind
Johnny on January 10th, 2010

It’s hard to find someone that has never had to deal with the problem of procrastination. It’s so common because most people naturally put off activities that they don’t enjoy.

On some days, procrastination might be a more difficult problem for you to conquer than others. One day you might sail along smoothly and the next you might not feel like leaving your bed. While everyone has a bad day from time to time, it’s also a good idea to overcome a procrastinating mindset.

Consider following these procrastination tips:

1. Take small steps. When you’re putting off starting a large project it may be because it seems like a huge task that’ll eat up all of your time. Instead of expecting yourself to work for hours on end, try starting with 10 minutes. This will get you going on it and then it will be easier to continue.

2. Give yourself breaks. While sitting down for 8 hours to complete a task sounds daunting, try dividing it up into small steps and take a break when you complete each step. Another method is to give yourself a 10 minute break every hour.

* Go for a walk in the fresh air, surf the ‘net, or text a friend on your break. Doing so will refresh your mind so you can get back to your project with renewed energy.

3. Make a plan. It’s easy to continue on the path of procrastination when your goals remain unclear. Give yourself a strict deadline if necessary. Write down the tasks you need to complete and the details of those tasks. It’s a way of holding yourself accountable for what is or isn’t done at the end of the day.

4. Get to the root of the problem. Sometimes there’s an underlying reason why you’ve been procrastinating on one specific issue. You might not be able to identify this reason until you really think about it. If you can identify the reason, you might solve your procrastination problem for that specific issue.

5. Reward yourself. While a break might seem like a reward, you can promise yourself other types of rewards for completing tough tasks. Decide on something you want to have or want to do. Allow yourself this luxury once you’ve completed the task at hand.

6. Believe in yourself. When you believe in yourself, you gain a passion for life and an enthusiasm that will help you get through the day. Once you believe in yourself, you have the power to get over procrastination and reach your ultimate goals in life.

7. Do the least-liked task first. When your day consists of many tasks you need to complete, start with the one that’s hanging over your head. While you might be procrastinating against all of them, once the bad ones are out of the way, your day will improve.

8. Schedule fun tasks, too! It’s important to make time for yourself, so enjoyable tasks should be a part of your day, too. Since your to-do list is usually packed with undesirable tasks, you should include enjoyable activities as well.

* For example, if you want to play volleyball on Tuesday nights, write it down on your to-do list. When you cross it off your list, you’ll feel like you’ve accomplished something important – and you have!

Practice these techniques to help you fight procrastination and soon you’ll find that much of your stress has melted away and you’ll have more time for enjoying the things you love the most!

Without goals, there would be no passion, purpose, or drive in life. If your goals are too vague, you’ll find much more difficulty on your journey than if you’d properly prepared in the first place.

Planning Your Goals

The planning phase is the most important stage when it comes to achieving your goals. Planning might come easy or hard for you, but one thing’s for sure, without planning the end goal may not even exist at all.

While it’s important to set up your own system that works for you, there are some simple goal setting strategies you can use to make your planning easier.

Consider the following tips for finding clarity in your goals:

1. Decide what you want. Whether your goal is lofty or little, decide exactly what it is that you want. If you want money, how much? If you want to lose weight, how many pounds? If you want success, how do you describe your vision of success?

* Don’t be afraid to take your time to figure out what you want. At some point you’ll need to eventually sift through your thoughts and take action, but make sure you’re acting on what’s most important to you!

2. Be specific. Be very detailed as you develop every part of your goal. Instead of a goal like “I want to be better at sports,” consider a goal like “I want to perform exceptionally well during spring tryouts so I can become the all-star point guard for my high school basketball team.” Just being “better” at sports is too vague. There are too many options and avenues to take that your mind can’t focus on any one route to your goal.

3. Write it down. Write down your ideas and decisions. It doesn’t matter if you use pencil and paper, a computer, or even a cell phone. What’s important is the fact that you can keep track of a large amount of specific information instead of trying to remember everything. After all, goals only seem real when you see them clearly before you.

4. Break down your goal into increments. If you have a lofty goal, it’ll become manageable if you break it down into smaller pieces. Smaller pieces will make your goal seem less complex. Plus, it’ll be easier for you to achieve your goal if everything is set out for you as mini-goals, instead of just one huge feat.

5. Repeat the process. Once you’ve found a good system, it’s time to repeat the process. Clarify your other goals that you’d like to achieve.

* For example, if you’d like to “spend more time with the family,” which is too vague, make a list of specific family activities you’d like to do together, and then make more lists that detail how you can make those goals a reality.

Don’t Wait For “Someday”

Some of the reasons why people tend to keep their goals vague is that they’re actually afraid of achieving them. It’s true!

After all, it’s a whole lot easier to put off your goals and do nothing, than to take action to achieve it. But what good is a goal that merely resides on paper?

Once you’ve decided on a clear goal, it’s time to take swift action to make it a reality. Don’t wait for someday to achieve your goals. There’s no time like the present… so get moving!

Nearly everyone will have trouble sleeping from time to time. However, if you can’t sleep for a large portion of the night or have trouble sleeping almost every night, you may have a problem with insomnia.

Insomnia can plague you for a number of different reasons and can manifest in different ways.
You may find that you have trouble falling asleep or you might fall asleep easily, but then have difficulty staying asleep.

When you’re suffering from lack of sleep, it’s important to focus on finding a solution as soon as possible. Whether you’re going to try natural or prescription medication methods, you should be able to find something that works in your case. Of course, always consult your physician.

Consider the following for reducing insomnia:

1. Get adequate exercise. Exercise not only helps your body, it helps your mind as well. It’s an excellent activity for your total body health. Exercise relieves stress and releases chemicals in the brain that puts you at ease and helps you relax.

2. Wind down at the end of the day. If you feel anxious at the end of the day and have trouble falling asleep, it’s important to take time to wind down. Decide that the 30-60 minutes before bedtime is a time for relaxation for you. Instead of TV, food, alcohol, or caffeine, try a bath, journaling, prayer, or meditation.

* Release your mind from heavy thoughts or important decisions before bed.

* Engage in an activity that you personally find relaxing and make sure you do it every night. Bedtime routines are important to overcome insomnia.

3. Valerian root. Valerian root is a popular natural remedy for insomnia. It helps calm you and reduces anxiety symptoms so you can relax before bed. It’s a good choice alternative if you’d rather take a natural route, instead of resorting to prescriptions.

4. Reduce stress. Take time to identify what is causing you stress in life. If you’re taking on too much, consider giving yourself a lighter load. If you’re having problems at home or work, focus on those problems first. You may notice that solving your day-to-day problems will directly help you solve your insomnia at night.

5. Prescription medication. There are many prescription medicines you can consider taking after getting diagnosed by a doctor or psychiatrist. Your doctor first needs to determine the cause of your insomnia. Some prescriptions that may help include antidepressant drugs and anti-anxiety medication. Consult with your family physician to learn more about this option.

Getting Rid Of Insomnia

While you may not be able to get rid of insomnia forever, these tips should give you the power to keep it at bay. However, if you feel that you can’t control the problem, be sure to seek professional help.

The real trick to reducing insomnia is to find the underlying cause. When you can’t sleep, there’s usually something deeper at play. You may have an overactive mind, unresolved conflict in your life, stress at home or work, or other issues. Whatever the case is, it’s important to get the help you need to seek solutions. Once you solve that underlying issue, you’ll feel overjoyed when you’re able to get a good night’s rest!

It’s hard to keep regret out of your life. No matter where you find yourself today, there’s a chance that you’ll have certain things you wish you did differently. When you strive to look at your situation with a different perspective, you’ll gain a better understanding about life and you’ll learn to live without regret.

While you won’t be able to completely eliminate regret in your life, you can take steps to reduce it. Strive to keep your life organized and live your life your way.

Establish Your Priorities

One way to begin living without regret is to sort out your priorities. Ask yourself what ultimate goal you’re working towards. Are you happy with where you are and where you’re going? If you’re living your life according to plan and you’re happy, then you have nothing to regret.

If changes need to be made, taking small steps may be of help to you. Once you’ve made decisions that you’re comfortable with, you may feel as if a weight has been lifted from your shoulders. This is regret leaving your life!

Live By the Golden Rule

Everyone can benefit by living his or her life with the golden rule in mind. The golden rule is known in all of the world’s religions. It’s special because it’s a concept that we can all agree on, despite our differences.

Simply stated, the golden rule is: “Treat people the way you’d like to be treated.” If you do this, you’ll definitely keep your regrets to a minimum. You’ll be learning how to treat people with kindness no matter what. You’ll be learning how to treat people fairly and you’ll gain empathy. When you put yourself in someone else’s shoes before you act, you’ll be less likely to engage in an act that you’ll regret later.

Take Swift Action

The next step is to take swift action in your life. You only have one life and the time is now. If your goals are clear and you know what you want, what are you waiting for? A common regret is not doing the things that are truly important to them. You need to do these things instead of putting them off until tomorrow!

Have you always wanted to start your own business? Start one! Would you like to get back in touch with your father? Do it! Yes, it’s difficult, yet it’s also simple once you’ve made the commitment to act.

Spend Time with Loved Ones

Spend all the time you can with your loved ones. If they live far away, visit when you can and call often.

Make time for your immediate family by scheduling dinners together or family nights out. Delve deep into the relationships you have with your family. A common regret is sticking to surface topics when it comes to your family. Find out the hopes, fears and even regrets of your family members. Sharing your regrets can be another way of coming to a resolution!

Forget Regret

Ultimately, it always comes down to the fact that you can’t change the past no matter how hard you try, nor how often you think about it. All you can do is take action now to change what happens in the future.

Regret clouds our current thinking and stands in the way of a happy future. But you have the power to blast through regret and move forward with your life!

The first step to improving your credit score is to obtain a current copy of your credit report. Once you have something to work from, you’ll know where you stand and you can take action to improve your credit and raise your score.

There are many systems and companies out there that’ll advertise a “free” credit report, only to enroll you into other paid programs or recurring memberships. These paid programs may benefit you, but read the fine print to ensure you’re getting only what you need.

Here are some tips and techniques that can help you raise your credit score:

1. Keep some unused accounts open. Closing unused accounts is a common myth when it comes to improving your credit score. In fact, closing accounts can actually hurt your score. Why? Because a part of your score is calculated by determining how much debt you have versus how much available credit you have.

* If you close out your available credit, your debt becomes a larger percentage of the credit available to you and may lower your score.

2. Spread out your debts. You can improve your score by spreading your debt among credit cards even if your debt remains exactly the same. This is because a credit card that’s almost maxed out is more likely to be detrimental to your score. Consider transferring that balance to one or more other credit card accounts.

3. Pay on time. This is an obvious tip, but one that’s still worth mentioning. Make sure you pay all of your accounts on time. Even one slip up may affect your score.

* If you have trouble remembering to pay on time, consider setting up some kind of reminder. You can even set your accounts to automatic bill payment through your banking service.

4. Avoid applying for too many cards. Your score can be affected if you fill out too many credit applications over a short period of time. While you can acquire multiple cards over time, it’s just not a good idea to sign up for too many of them at once. This makes you look desperate for any kind of credit.

5. Watch out for scams. It’s so easy to fall victim to a scam these days. Some scammers are so creative and seem so trustworthy that even the smartest people can be drawn into their scams. If you want help with debt consolidation, consider contacting the government. Don’t trust any independent company without lengthy research.

6. Use credit occasionally. Even if you prefer to use cash, you should still have at least one credit card account that you use occasionally. When it comes time to use credit, no credit can be just as detrimental as bad credit. Chances are you’ll want some good credit eventually, especially when it comes time to purchase cars or homes.

7. Be truthful and accurate. Don’t falsify any information when it comes to checking or applying for credit. Also, double check your applications for any mistakes you may have made. Any misstatements will very likely be caught, so it’s not worth the risk.

8. Check your score each year. You can check your credit score once per year without any penalty. Take the time to stay on top of your credit. It’s such a huge part of your life – whether you like it or not – and it deserves your attention. With regular checks, you’ll be the first to know if there’s something that needs to be taken care of.

Improving your credit score can save you a lot of money, time, and frustration. Get in the habit of using these strategies and you’ll see that score going up as time goes on.

If you don’t already have your dream job, what’s holding you back from the job you deserve? You’ll soon discover that you can no longer make excuses because the time to attract your dream job is now!

It doesn’t really matter what your end goal is, there are always ways to get there. The only real decision you need to make is what you want to go after. After that, it’s all planning and implementing!

Use these simple strategies for attracting your dream job:

1. Learn by example. Do you know of someone who is doing what you dream of? Are there any role models, mentors, or coaches you can learn from? Study what others have done and ask them questions if you have the opportunity. Now that you already know what you want, you just need to figure out exactly how to get it!

2. Break it down. While you’re keeping your eye on the prize, you might be taking too much in at once. You also may be trying to accomplish too much too fast. Break down your dream goal into smaller mini-goals. Once you have a simplified plan in place, attack each mini-goal with your full attention and you’ll be chipping away slowly, but surely at your dream goal!

3. Get your foot in the door. In the long run, it’s better for you to take the first step toward your dream job, rather than working a dead end job, even if the dead end job is paying you more. If you can bear working for less money for a while, the long-term benefits will be worth it.

4. Work on communication. If you work on your communication and people skills, you can work toward nearly any job that you want. This is because you’ll get your points across clearly and become well respected.

5. Make yourself stand out. It always helps if you’re seen as the type of person that will go the extra mile. If there’s a specific job that you’re interviewing for, study the objectives and duties of the job carefully. Make sure you have the qualities and skill set they’re looking for, and if you don’t, show that you’re willing to take the initiative to acquire them.

6. Take action. There may be a number of things that are holding you back from truly going for your dream job. Identify these causes and eliminate them. What are you afraid of? What is in the way of you and your dreams?

Your Dreams Take Time

It may take time for you to attract your dream job. Chances are your dream job isn’t an entry-level position at your local McDonald’s, but perhaps you’ll want to own a restaurant someday.
In order to make this goal a reality, realize that your dreams take time, research, guidance, money, and a whole lot of effort. After all, no restaurant opened overnight!

So what can you do today to get started on your goal? Perhaps you can begin your research, locate a mentor, start a savings account, or do any number of other simple tasks that will help you build momentum.

Use these strategies whenever possible to help you attract your dream job. With consistent action and effort, the only way to go is up!

The art of self-hypnosis often gets dismissed as being “new age.” However, just like nearly everything in life, if you truly believe in yourself and the practice, it can prove to be very helpful.

What Is Self-Hypnosis?

Self-hypnosis is a form of hypnosis that you can perform on yourself. It certainly comes in handy because you won’t need anyone else to help you receive the many benefits of hypnosis. Self-hypnosis is now a large part of modern hypnotherapy.

How Can Self-Hypnosis Help?

The uses for self-hypnosis are nearly endless. If you have a problem that you wish to resolve, chances are, self-hypnosis can help you find your solution. Self-hypnosis can obliterate the obstacles that keep you from achieving your goals.

Here are some of the challenges that self-hypnosis can help you solve:

* Smoking and other addictions
* Personal development
* Stress management
* Problem solving
* Pain management, including chronic pain or the pain of childbirth or surgery

When you practice self-hypnosis, you can get yourself through pretty much any of life’s challenges!

Practicing Self-Hypnosis

The image of hypnosis that you have in mind right now is probably the image of a person holding a pocket watch counting backwards while saying, “you’re getting sleeeeepy.” Sorry, but that’s only in the cartoons!

Hypnosis isn’t about tricking people or forcing them to fall asleep, it’s simply a state of deep relaxation that can be achieved, even through self-hypnosis.

The truth is, self-hypnosis is similar to meditation. Meditation, however, has more of a focus on finding your breath and staying in the moment, while self-hypnosis takes things further in order for you to solve one specific issue.

A self-hypnosis session will typically last from 15 minutes to 1 hour. It’s flexible so you can find a session length that works well for you.

Imagery In Self-Hypnosis

One way that self-hypnosis differs from meditation is in its use of imagery. If your goal is relaxation, you can imagine yourself in a place that you find relaxing. It could be an actual place that you’ve been to, or a place in your mind that you’ve always dreamed of.

Using Affirmations

Self-hypnosis often makes use of affirmations. Affirmations are short positive statements, like mantras, that you repeat to yourself several times a day. The most important characteristics of a good affirmation are the following:

* Spoken in first person
* Spoken in the present tense
* Spoken with a positive tone

For example, if you were using affirmations for childbirth, you might say, “I am having a calm birth,” even if you haven’t entered active labor yet. The purpose is to train your mind to think of the situation in a positive light, which helps to build confidence and comfort.

Affirmations are more powerful than you think, which is why they’re useful in self-hypnosis.

Scripts and CDs

Using the help of scripts and CDs, anyone can enjoy the benefits of self-hypnosis. They’re popular choices because they’ll allow you to gain the benefits of music, affirmations, and imagery without having to plan those steps out yourself. They guide you through the entire session.

When you’re ready to try self-hypnosis, remember that there aren’t any strict rules. As long as you can gain some time to yourself and close your eyes and relax, you can explore the world of self-hypnosis.

There’s a distinct difference between being quiet and being shy. When you’re quiet, you know you have the option to speak, but you just choose not to do so. But when you’re shy, you’re plagued by discomfort, worry, or even anxiety in social situations.

No matter how shy you think you are, there are ways to train yourself to overcome this barrier. While you won’t turn into a social butterfly overnight, you can become a more confident person.

Another benefit of overcoming your shyness is that, without that timidity, you tend to take advantage of new opportunities that come your way.

These tips and tricks will help you conquer shyness:

1. Accept your personality. It’s truly important for you to accept yourself for the person that you are. You can never be anyone but you. If you’re a quiet person from time to time, so be it. There is just as much beauty in the personality of a quiet person as there is in an outgoing person.

2. Put yourself out there. When you’re shy, you’re more likely to avoid social situations altogether. This only makes the problem worse. If you make the effort to participate, you’ll become more comfortable in every social gathering.

* Take small steps, but take action to step out of your comfort zone.

3. Avoid running away. Even if you’re feeling especially awkward and anxiety ridden, get through the situation as best as you can.

* Afterwards, you can evaluate what you went through so you can grow from it. Ask yourself why you felt the way you did and see if you can correct the problem for next time.

4. Learn to relax. When you’re feeling shy, your mind begins to race. You might be thinking about all the things that can go wrong and you’ll find it impossible to relax. Instead of thinking about what might happen, concentrate on the present and on what actually is happening.

* If you begin to panic, use relaxation and breathing techniques to calm yourself down.

5. Practice your social skills. If you’re shy in social situations, try to practice your communication and social skills in non-threatening environments, such as with family or close friends. This will take away some of the scary “unknowns” that might be causing you to be afraid.

6. Use visualizations. Visualizations can be very powerful. They can help you relax and get past the anxiety associated with shyness.

* Close your eyes and think about yourself in a situation where you’d normally feel shy or panicky. Instead of feeling overwhelmed with negative emotions, visualize yourself as completely confident and happy.

7. Focus on someone else. Place all of your focus on the person you’re sharing a conversation with. Really listen to what they’re saying. If your energy is focused away from how you feel, you’ll be less likely to be overtaken with the feelings of shyness.

* It may also help you to encourage the other person to do more of the talking. Use open-ended questions where they can launch into a whole story or explanation instead of just answering yes or no questions.

Shyness is a combination of fears and feelings that are reinforced by habits. Use these strategies to help you change your habits and your feelings of shyness will dissipate along with the old habits!
