Have you ever said, “I wish I were somebody else?? If you have and you have doubts, fears, or insecurities about who you are or what you do for a living these things may be what spur you onto the path of self-improvement. Sometimes what spurs us to improvement ourselves is the vision we have for the future. The desire for self-improvement may come as the result of an event or crisis in our life. A relationship with someone of importance can also give rise to the need for self-improvement.
Self-improvement can also be the result of purely selfish motivation such as a desire to fit into a fabulous dress we saw at the mall last week, or to look beautiful on our wedding day, or to fit the description of a highly successful business entrepreneur.
A foul habit can also be the thing that inspires us to seek self-improvement. Sometimes we notice the habit and sometimes those around us point out the habit to us. A grandchild may tell us that we stink and so we decide to stop smoking. While on a date, we may be told that we have a foul-smelling mouth or our best friend points out that we have a bad habit of biting every fingernail in sight, even those that are not our own!
Low self-esteem, lack of self-confidence, lack of friends, lack of job opportunities are all situations that can force us to take a good look at our present situation and to make a good assessment of where we wish we could be in life.
When we look at others and envy them, want to emulate them, or be them it is time to make some serious self-improvements.
There are many reasons why individuals find themselves on the path to self-improvement. The path may have a destination that is physical, emotional, spiritual or intellectual in nature. The self-improvement process may also include a combination of these if they are necessary in order to achieve the goal of the self-improvement.
We must not forget that there are other reasons for embarking on the path to self-improvement, namely monetary reasons. Your boss may hint that you might be up for a raise IF you had more skills to offer the company. This hint may spur you on to signing up for evening business classes at the local community college. The boredom of flipping burgers and the desire to purchase a cool car may have you seeing dollar signs which in turn makes you realize that improving your earning potential is a good idea, so you enroll in a technical school.
Romance and the desire for sexual companionship can also be a great motivator towards self-improvement. We often find ourselves chasing the goal to improve our looks, weight, and wardrobe, even our financial status all in the name of romance or to get a date or please a spouse.
